Ever since the storySouth editors began hosting the annual Million Writers Award for best online fiction, people have asked us why stories from our own journal can't be considered for the award. The answer, of course, is simple: To avoid the conflicts of interest that so often pop up in the awarding of literary prizes.

Still, we wanted to honor the best stories, essays, and poetry from storySouth. The result is storySouth: the Best of the South 2005, a collection of the best writings published in this journal over the last year. This 60-page publication is now sold out but is still available for free as a PDF download.
